Things you might not know about Thailand
International travel has plenty of different challenges ranging from culture, food and language to unusual customs and traditions. Whether you are traveling abroad for the first time or are a seasoned world traveler, we bet you have never heard these funny things about Bangkok, Thailand:
1 – Unusual Laws
We’ve all heard about funny laws on the books that may have made sense when they were first passed but now sound strange or even funny in today’s world. Well, Bangkok is no different. Three funny ones that stand out to us are:
A – Durian fruit cannot be used as a weapon. The fine structure for committing this illegal act is related to the number of thorns that make contact with the intended human or animal target.
B – Don’t drive around the city shirtless. This is illegal.
C – If you have an event to attend to and you leave your premises without wearing underwear – prepare to be fined. That is, if this error in judgment is discovered.
2 – Red Bull, No Bull
Thailand has many claims to fame but probably one of the most unusual is that the caffeine and sugar energy drink named Red Bull was created by a Thai. Chaleo Yoovidhya, who concocted the beverage in 1976, was the third richest man in the country at the time of his death in 2012. An Austrian businessman, Dietrich Mateschitz, partnered with the inventor in the 1980’s, modified the drink for Western tastes and…the rest is history!
3 – It’s Not Really Bangkok
The capital city of the country is not really named Bangkok. Locals call it Krung Thep which is a shortened version of the actual name which is 169 characters long. For the record, it is Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahinthara Yutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukamprasit. I suddenly think that ‘Bangkok’ has a nice ring to it!
4 – Male, Female and The Third Gender
Gender identity is no problem in Thailand. In fact, it is one of the first countries on the planet to provide washrooms for transgendered men (commonly known as Lady boys). So, if you find yourself looking at three different washroom doors somewhere in the capitol city, fear not. The international symbols for ‘Men’ and ‘Women’ will still be prominently displayed.
5 – Coin Trivia
Thai Baht coins share an interesting and unusual trait. Each of them contains the picture of temples. Each of the temples is located within Bangkok and you can visit each of them within the same day (there are four baht coins in total).
